Skiddaw Lesser Man

Lesser Man

That rather chaotic jumble of slate and rusty metal is the summit cairn of Lesser Man, but, even on a cloudy day it has a wonderful backdrop of Derwent Water and the Lakeland Fells – including Cat Bells, Maiden Moor, Hindscarth, Robinson, and Causey Pike.

The name is strange, but can be put into context. The high point of Skiddaw – the main top –  is called High Man. A smaller subsidiary summit about a mile to the south west is called Skiddaw Little Man (usually shortened to Little Man). Little Man, in turn, itself has a smaller subsidiary summit – Lesser Man. See – it all makes perfect sense!
