Hardknott Pass

Hardknott Pass

On a fairly typical Lake District day, Hardknott Pass is as steep as it looks, and is viewed as a challenge for motorists. A major east-west route for centuries, the romans built a fort here, on the high ground left of middle in the photograph. This fort was midway between the roman forts at Ambleside (Galava to the romans) and Ravenglass (Glannaventa) on the coast. Isolated and subject to the notorious Lake District weather, it cannot have been viewed as one of the roman armys more desired postings.
