About 10 years ago I bought a young vine and planted it in my garden. The instructions told you to wait at least 5 years before harvesting. I did so. Worcestershire not being known as a traditional grape growing area, I was not sure what I would get, but I trained the vine over a pergola I built to provide a nice leafy shade. Grapes would have been a bonus. It turns out the harvest directly correlates with the quality of the summer. Last year was a poor, wet summer – I got nothing at all. This year has been in complete contrast, and I am set for my best harvest ever. This is one of the bunches, set against the evening summer light. The grapes are smaller than those you buy and eat – but these are home grown.
