Bridge 61

Bridge 61 (1)

The bridges on the Stratford-upon-Avon canal, as originally built, were made in two parts, with a gap across the arch. The idea was to allow the narrow boats to pass without having to unhitch the towrope from the horse. Long out of use, the gaps have either been filled in with detritus, or the two spans have moved together over time. Just as well – these days Health and Safety would probably have filled in the gaps anyway!
